What is Project Jericho?
Project Jericho is a collaborative program between the Clark County Department of Job and Family Services and the Clark State Community College Performing Arts Center, providing performing arts workshops, artist residencies, and family performances to at-risk youth and families. The program is based on recent research that demonstrates the positive impact of arts programs on at-risk youth and families, including (among other indicators) decreases in delinquent behavior and court referrals, increased communication and social skills, and improved ability to complete home and school tasks. Project Jericho changes lives through positive in-depth arts experiences for at-risk youth and families.
Just as the trumpets blare brought down the walls of Jericho, the arts break down barriers to communication, self-expression, and confidence, allowing the spirit and soul to nurture and grow.
Addressing the Needs of Young People and Families
Young people and families who are clients of the department of job and family services often struggle with a variety of issues. Project Jericho activities are designed to address the following needs of young people and families in the Clark County area:
- Development of positive interaction skills between young people and their parents. Project Jecho provides fun, creative and educational activities that can be shared with parents and peers.
- Improvement of appropriate expression skills. Alternatives to yelling, fighting, or withdrawal are offered through expression of artistic endeavors.
- Development of positive attributes. Positive reinforcement of creative skills encourages increased involvement in school projects, extra-curricular activities, and family functions.
- Encouragement of appropriate coping methods. Project Jericho activities develop new relaxation techniques, alternative release of stress, and new ways of expressing emotions by channeling through the arts.
Reaching for A Goal
Project Jericho strives to be a change agent in the lives of those who are involved with the program. By successfully working together with youth and families, we all benefit from the following Project Jericho goals:
- To Strengthen Youth and Families by building strong social and communication skills, increasing self-esteem, and creating connections to the community.
- To Strengthen the Arts Experience by increasing participation in and understanding of the arts, providing additional performance and exhibit opportunities, and positively affecting local arts organizations through artist and audience development.
- To Strengthen the Community by providing opportunities for youth and families to connect with and give back to the community, positively affecting student performance in school, and positively helping families to stay together or reunite.
